In July 2019, Dr Christina Clarke took up a three-year position at the School of Art and Design in the Centre for Art History and Art Theory (CAHAT) as Lecturer in Early Modern Art, Design and Material Culture.

Christina has been a member of the ANU community for 20 years, completing undergraduate studies in Classics and Gold and Silversmithing, a Master of Art History and Curatorial Studies (Advanced) and in 2012 she graduated from the School of Art with a PhD for her practice-lead research into metalsmithing practice in Bronze Age Greece. This study was published as a monograph, The Manufacture of Minoan Metal Vessels: Theory and Practice, in 2013 by Astrom Editions. More recently, Christina has expanded her research on historical metalsmithing practices to silversmithing in early-modern Europe. For this project she undertook an Endeavour Research Fellowship at Oxford University with the Voltaire Foundation in 2018, where she studied silversmithing in early-modern France and the manufacture of silver furniture for Versailles under Louis XIV. Since 2017, she has worked with CAHAT Senior Lecturer Dr Robert Wellington and colleagues in Australia and Europe on Australian Research Council Discovery Project Performing Transdisciplinarity, a collaboration to produce a digital critical edition of an eighteenth-century songbook, Choix de chansons.

Christina looks forward to bringing her deep interest in the history of design, craft and material culture along with her maker’s technical knowledge to the courses she will teach in CAHAT.
